Between the Showers - Review

Sunday Tribune - 2001

Fintan Vallely

An altogether beautiful harp album that takes on the full gamut of traditional dance music and airs as well as three Carolan pieces that include the unusual Madge Malone and two versions of Turlough MacDonough. Save one track with guitar, harp is let stand in its own space, permitting the achievement of an ambience that (as with Laoise Kelly) is the player’s expert construction - the art of harping itself. A sprinkle of new pieces acknowledges the instrument’s roll of honour; and the classic O’Farrell’s shows it off in a set dating to its 18th century eclipse by pipes. Interestingly, ‘The Mist Covered Mountain’ sits beautifully here - the original, likely-harp, Scottish origin breaking through the Junior Crehan fable.
